Carmel-by-the-Sea and the Big Sur coastline hold some of the most striking landscapes in California — windswept cypress trees, dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and golden light that changes by the hour. It's a place people travel from across the world to propose, elope, and celebrate the beginning of a life together, and it's where I love working most outside of San Francisco.
I photograph proposals, engagement sessions, and microweddings throughout Carmel and Big Sur with the same fine art documentary approach I bring to every session — I follow you, I watch, and I catch the moments that are already happening. Whether it's a quiet proposal at sunrise or a small ceremony shared with a handful of loved ones, the goal is always the same: images that feel like you, not like a performance.
Carmel and Big Sur are, quite honestly, my favorite place in the world — and I can't fully explain why. There's something about this coastline that settles me in a way few places do. For more than 17 years, I've been discovering the hikes, hidden swimming holes, and quiet corners of this area that you really only find by spending real time here — the kind of spots that don't show up on a map, the ones a local shows you rather than one you stumble onto as a visitor. That's what I bring to your session: not just a camera, but genuine familiarity with a place I love deeply.
This coastline rewards planning. Weather shifts quickly, the best light is often golden hour — the hour or so before sunset — and several of the most beautiful spots along the coast require a photography permit, since much of this land is protected as state park or forest service land. I'll help you navigate all of this as part of planning your session, so the only thing you need to focus on is the moment itself.
Based in San Jose, I'm often closer to Carmel and Big Sur than many photographers who serve this coast — which means less driving fatigue on the day of your session, faster turnaround on planning questions, and someone who genuinely knows these trails, not just a portfolio built from a handful of visits.

How much does a Carmel or Big Sur session cost?
I offer three options: a Proposal Session ($450, 45 minutes, one location), an Engagement Session ($650, 90 minutes, up to two locations), and a Microwedding/Elopement ($2,200, 3 hours, up to three locations). A $200 retainer secures your date on any package.
Do I need a permit to get married or take photos in Big Sur or Carmel?
It depends on the location. Several of the most beautiful spots along this coast require a commercial photography permit and sometimes a separate ceremony permit. As an example, Garrapata State Park charges $400 for a one-hour ceremony with up to 25 guests, or $650 if you'd like any setup like chairs — and applications need to go in at least 60 days ahead, since anything within 21 days of your date won't be accepted. I'll help point you toward the right resources for your chosen location during planning, but permits and any associated fees are the couple's responsibility.
What's the best time of year to visit for a session?
March through November tends to offer the most consistent weather along this coast. That said, this area is beautiful year-round, and even fog and overcast light can photograph stunningly here — it's part of the coast's character, not something to avoid.
What time of day is best for photos?
Golden hour — roughly the hour before sunset — gives the softest, most flattering light along the coast, and it's when I recommend booking most sessions. Sunrise is a beautiful (and quieter) alternative if you'd rather avoid weekend crowds at popular spots.
Do you provide the officiant for a microwedding?
I focus on photography, but I'm happy to connect you with officiants I trust for Carmel and Big Sur ceremonies if you don't already have one in mind.
Can you help me plan a surprise proposal?
Yes — I'll help you scout a location, plan timing around light and crowds, and work out a discreet way for me to be in position without giving anything away. Just let me know your vision and I'll help build the plan around it.
How far in advance should we book?
I'd recommend at least a month out, especially for weekend dates or golden hour time slots, since those book up first. If your timeline is tighter, reach out anyway — I'll do my best to accommodate.
How soon will we see our photos?
You'll receive a sneak peek within 48 hours of your session, with your full gallery delivered shortly after through a private online gallery you can download and share freely.
Do we own the rights to our photos?
Yes. Every package includes full reproduction rights with no watermarks, so you're free to print, share, and use your images however you'd like.
Do you travel outside Carmel and Big Sur?
Yes — I'm based in the greater Bay Area and regularly travel throughout California, including Monterey, Napa, and beyond. Just mention where you're envisioning your session and I'll let you know what's possible, including any travel considerations.
Do you offer bilingual service?
Yes — I photograph and communicate fluently in both English and Español throughout the entire process, at no extra charge.
